BEFORE THE CITY
Aleksandr Sologubov / Kaliningrad, Russia
It must be noted that since 1995 "Kalinin Park" is no longer the official name. It is now "Central Park."
The general attitude of Kaliningraders towards parks comes from the Soviet slogan "Garden City"; the whole city resembles a huge park. There are more than 400 plant species and at least 85 square meters of verdure for each citizen. This could indeed be true. However, I have never paid much attention to this or made an inventory, as I am used to living in these environs.
Before World War 2 there was a cemetery here. It is now a place for recreation and entertainment. It's crowded, rippling with children's laughter and full of noise from the side-shows (to the great annoyance of the residents of the surrounding blocks). Concerts by various musical groups, athletic competitions and jousting tournaments take place there. This park, like any other such place, attracts a diverse audience in addition to its regular visitors. Hard-rockers, Satanists, alcoholics, homosexuals and "ordinary" people come here at the end of the working day to have a drink or two. Regarding this pastime, the park is a traditional place for drinking hard alcoholic. According to the recollections of others, people of diverse ages and professions have been drinking heavily in the park since its very foundation. And they drink in diverse ways: in a civilized manner, in special drinking spots, and in spontaneous outbursts of drinking all over the park.
The image of the park is unique for each citizen. Some remember cultural events for the masses; some remember childhood sports among old trees and moss-grown headstones. Others remember this park as a lonely place for drinking. Some are terrified with the very idea of converting a place of eternal peace into a place for entertainment and a church into a puppet theater. Some still remember about trophies won while running through the ravaged graves (indeed!), while others can tell you about how they wait here in the shadows of night to mug passers-by, for yet others this is the ideal place for picking up girls.
Different people have different names for the park. Some I do not even dare to mention. The most famous name is "Park of the Quick and the Dead." Presumably this name appeared in 1949, when the park was founded. At that time it was the first specialized place for recreation in the post-war city. Considered as a whole this park is not historically unique. Medieval European cemeteries also served as "common homes": the quick shared these places with the dead. Townspeople used to take strolls there, arrange rendezvous, indulge in revelry, bake bread, strike bargains, hold auctions, and sell various goods - especially beer and vine - at fairs. Cemeteries were places of "joint" existence.
And our park - I almost wrote "cemetery" - in near future is bound to be the same, a place of "communal" life.
I will conclude with a quotation from an announcement dating back 1952, the first year of the park's official opening. I do hope it will be interesting. You can read this announcement yourself when you visit the park:
OPENING OF THE SUMMER SEASON AT THE KALININ AMUSEMENT PARK
Despite the fall in temperature thousands of Kaliningraders took part in the opening of the Kalinin City Amusement Park this Sunday. Artists of the State Circus, the State Variety Theater of Leningrad, and the Smolensk Puppet Theater staged a performance of the fairytale Scarlet Flower at the Green Theater with great success. Comrade Lubimov's lecture on the germ warfare waged by American interventionist in Korea was listened to with great interest. Many Kaliningraders attended matches by the city's boxers, watched athletic competitions in weight-lifting, and took part in indoor games and recreational activities.
