WILD WEST OF RUSSIA

Elena Tsygankova / St Petersburg - Kaliningrad, Russia

This heading (usually a column with a date) was in the top right corner of the first page of a letter. Tens of such letters were written by Liudmila Ponomareva and sent from Kaliningrad to my address.

At that time, in the middle of 90s it seemed to me that I estimated her at her true worth as an artist and knew her quite well as a person. "Wild West of Russia" strained me a bit: I took it as a doubtful geographical definition, on the one hand, and as deliberateness untypical of Liudmila, on the other hand.

In 2000 on June 29th there was a leave-taking… A heavy bag with papers collected in the sculptor's studio went with me to St.Petersburg. Further events among which a determinative one was actually new acquaintance with Liudmila Ponomareva led to creation of a book and my long hovering here.

Today, having swished the space of Kaliningrad for ten months, I can say with certainty that Liudmila Ponomareva is accurate and aphoristic defined past, present and probably the nearest future of the region. Everything interlaced here: both "west" in all possible senses and "the smell of Russian spirit" (proved by our frantic pre-jubilee travails and attempts), and "wildness" of indifference.

She, who by her skin felt the gaps of the urban space, has been trying to fill them with her "poetry of volumes" through all her life. A fountain composition "Baltic Sea" was created for a particular meeting place (close to the entrance to stadium "Baltika"). Beautiful in their plasticity and uniqueness ideas were born incessantly. She tried to reach us, citizens (officials are also Kaliningraders). Has not managed…

Perhaps, she can manage when an album presenting Ponomareva'a oeuvre fully created on this land, will be published. Only remains the hope that on the island Kaliningrad drifting to "unknown tomorrow" there are live people for whom publication of the heritage of a true artist is important.
