KANT

Aleksandr Sologubov / Kaliningrad, Russia

Kant is one of Kaliningrad's symbols. The name of this symbol is remarkably connected with the name of the deceased Konigsberg philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724-1804). However, this article is not about the philosopher Kant. This Kant is not present in the city; he died 200 years ago. Those who wish to learn more about him may read about his life and works in specialised books. The symbol "Kant" has become familiar to the citizens of Kaliningrad, they use it almost automatically. However guests are sometimes confused by what seems to be natural to the locals. Here are a few words to familiarise visitors with this symbol:

…And what about the city's preeminent citizen - Kant! This is insanity. How many people in the country have ever read Kant's works? Possibly six or even fifty, but even they did it at gunpoint. And suddenly an entire city is dedicated to this rather inexplicable Kant. Excursions, streets, and institutes are named after him… Here we come to the rebuilt Cathedral. Kant is everywhere again - a bust, first editions. I open a visitor's comment book: "We enjoyed everything very much. We went swimming and sunbathing in the morning, and now we are getting acquainted with Kant - we donned him with a cap and took photographs with him. And what is yet to come! The sailors of the torpedo-boat destroyer Fast." What a catastrophe!...

At the grand opening of a museum I happened to hear the phrase: "Bring us books by Kant from the 18th and 17th centuries!" I felt like continuing this phrase with "of the 16th, 15th…." and so on. After all, the Kant symbol is eternal. Next I happened to hear something else: "We will continue Kant's business!" This was said by a person who had little in familiarity with philosophy. In other words, "Kant" has become available for the general public. My fears were confirmed by a newspaper article: "We shouldn't forget that we are a part of Russia," says the designer, "the spirit of patriotism must be in each of us." That is why the staff of a fashion house, led by the owner, conducted a ceremony on the eve of a holiday and donated a state symbol - a flag - to Kaliningrad's Kindergarten № 95. But that's not all. Now there is also a small volume by Kant, a symbol of Kaliningrad, in the kindergarten. According to the owner of the fashion house, the philosophy of this great thinker remains relevant to the present day: "He had so many tremendous ideas, which should be known by every Kaliningrad citizen," the designer exclaimed. According to her this action was conducted in the kindergarten not by chance:

…"When a person has problems, psychologists tend to appeal to their childhood to find the reasons for them, as it is in this very period that the fundamental bases of consciousness are formed. And I am sure that if this festival becomes traditional for children, they will be proud that they are Russians." (Slightly abridged text from an article in the newspaper Kaskad)
