BEFORE THE CITY
Aleksandr Sologubov / Kaliningrad, Russia
Since there are two buildings called "Cathedral" in the present day city, I should specify that I am writing about "the prewar construction." Hm, hm … as I can't remember the year, you will have to find it out for yourselves. There it is, next to Kant's tomb.
This Cathedral is "the main sight of the city," "there is nothing more important in Kaliningrad." "This is a tremendously beautiful building," "the most significant architectural monument in Kaliningrad," "the heart of Eastern Prussia," "the one and only building in Northern German Gothic style in Russia," "the outstanding feature of Kaliningrad." Besides, the Cathedral "is a real thing!" and "it looks very nice." It is located in the city's lowland, on the deserted sand island in the middle of the river. "It is being reconstructed with the best European bricks." I remember how the walls were excavated. Under the thin layer of turf and broken bricks there were bones, many bones.
The Cathedral has almost faded away. The dampness of the river penetrates his ancient sides on wet autumn evenings. This is a lonely old man, who has outlived everybody in this city and in this Prussia, simply everyone (there is one other solitary being in the city; read about it in the entry on "The Council House").
On the Internet I saw a photomontage made by a young Kaliningrad citizen: The Cathedral in a thick forest. Without the white blocks of flats. Without people. People come to the old man. But they are tourists. Because the Cathedral is a tourist place. There is a ticket office in the Cathedral.
There are many images of the old man in the city: on vodka bottles, cigarettes, in advertisements. His image is on the crockery, on publications, on T-shirts, calendars and so forth. Even in the poster "60 years Kaliningradgazifikatsia"! It bas been one of the most often exploited symbols of Kaliningrad during the past decade and a half.
I recently learned that the old man has become a trademark! (The castle located on the mountain on the Northern bank of the river had a better luck. As it doesn't physically exist, there is no trademark). This means that the prices of the above mentioned substances and things may increase by half a percent, as sales of goods with its picture must pay royalties on its account. But we don't hold a grudge about this. Let your old age be prosperous. I found a bottle with your picture at a shop. Gathered at home with my friends, I drink to you, old man!
